Obedience Classes

Dog Obedience Classes - For Adult Dogs & Puppies

Responsible dog ownership, basic training and good manners for the dogs are the focus of dog obedience training programs offered by the Humane Society of Calloway County. Our goal is for dogs to become well-behaved companions at home and in the community. You and your dog will have a terrific time, too!

The Commonwealth of Kentucky endorses the American Kennel Club® (AKC) Canine Good Citizen program, recognizing that responsible dog ownership is the key to resolving many problems in the community. It is our hope to diminish the number of dogs relinquished to shelters through the education offered by the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program and the AKC Canine Good Citizen training.

Head trainers bring decades of experience to the classes. Assistant and apprentice trainers provide lots of one-on-one attention. If your dog is six months of age or younger, check out the S.T.A.R. Puppy Program.
If your dog is over six months old, Canine Good Citizen training is for you and your dog.

ACT NOW! Registration is limited and is first come, first served.

The goals of the course are to teach responsible dog ownership to owners and provide basic training and good manners to dogs so that they become well-behaved companions at home and in the community. You and your dog will have a terrific time, too!

If your dog is older than six months, the American Kennel Club® (AKC) Canine Good Citizen Dog Obedience classes are for you and your dog.

Upon completion of the class, your pet will be evaluated for the American Kennel Club® (AKC)Canine Good Citizenship (CGC) program. We encourage everyone to take the test at the end of the course and if you and your dog do not pass, you are welcome and encouraged to continue training and attend any future test at no charge. The Humane Society of Calloway County hosts the American Kennel Club® (AKC) training program geared towards puppies and their owners. The AKC S.T.A.R.sm Puppy Program rewards responsible owners who take the time to train and socialize their new puppies.

The program is the puppy level of the AKC’s well-known Canine Good Citizen® program.  “S.T.A.R.” stands for Socialization, Training, Activity and a Responsible owner, all of the things a puppy needs to have a good life.

To get started, owners enroll in the S.T.A.R. Puppy Training Class instructed by Humane Society trainers. Classes include valuable training tips for puppy owners – such as how to housetrain – and lessons on practical skills for puppies – such as coming when called.  The program is open to all dogs. Puppies can begin training as soon as they have the necessary vaccines and they can enroll in AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy training at any point up until their six or seven month birthday.

Early training and socialization are key to having a well behaved dog. You will learn how to start your pup off on the right paw from the very beginning.

At the end of the training course, the instructors will administer the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy test. Upon passing, you and your puppy will get an application to send to AKC for enrollment in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program and will receive an AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy package which includes:

  • A frameable certificate
  • AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy medal
  • Subscription to monthly e-mail newsletter that includes training tips

AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy graduates will be encouraged to continue working towards the next step in training, AKC’s Canine Good Citizen award. Canine Good Citizen training emphasizes responsible owners and well-mannered dogs and is also offered by the Humane Society.
